Off balance

I’m a Libra, but it’s very rare that I’m balanced, I’m either slightly high or feeling low. I’ve self confidence issues and anxieties that hold me back from everyday things. In January, fed up with myself, how I looked and felt I joined a local gym- Synergy – in Cavan.  I completed four weeks of a six week programme early the previous year, didn’t finish it out and of course I was furious with myself for not going back. I started a new 6 week block in January- in these programmes, everything is laid out for you, a clean eating plan and lots of help and support. They weigh and do your measurements at the beginning of each block. When I finished the first block, I was disappointed, I had only lost three pounds, I did lose inches but I couldn’t get over the mind set that the number on the scales means everything. I felt deflated, I know in my heart that I’m overweight, and that I need to lose weight and I tried really hard for teh first time in my life- actually committed to a programme tailored to me to lose weight and I failed. I started another block at the end March with a I have two personal training sessions per week as well as two classes. I chose  Piloxing, which is a cardio workout, pilates-boxing and dance. I was really enjoying myself this time round- got into the health kick, bought a blender, was making smoothies, was eating healthily and all of a sudden when my energy levels should have been at their highest they plummeted. Last week I was tired, this week I’m exhausted. I had my last piloxing class last Thursday evening and I could barely get through it.  Last Friday night/morning I was akwoken by an intense pain in my jaw, I couldn’t believe it woke me up. It came from nowhere. I found ibuprofen in the press knocked back two and thankfully drifted back to sleep. But it was there when I woke up again and has been there ever since. I’ve been freaking out thinking it’s an abscess (I got a deep filling on a tooth before- It chipped since and food always gets trapped there– even though I floss) So I was worried it was an abscess, but my teeth aren’t sore it’s my jaw bone really so then I’m thinking it’s wisdom teeth coming through. Anyway, mum gave me antibiotics for the suspected abscess and I’ve been on nurofen plus tablets for the pain since Sunday. So I haven’t been at the gym or at classes since last week and I feel so shit. I feel guilty and I feel like I’m sabotaging all the good work I’ve done since I joined. I’ve slipped back to eating my ‘vice’ foods of bread and crisps. It’s a vicious circle and I’m spiraling out of control and to make matters worse I think my trainers are disappointed in me or at the very least pissed off, an that makes me feel worse.

I always do this to myself, sabotage, I’m my own worst enemy.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Will update soon …I swear

20140429-112755.jpgI miss my blog, I miss being able to sit down and happily type away random stuff that enters my head. I’ve been working in a local newspaper since October and I find after a day of writing and sourcing and stressing the last thing I want to do is write more. But it’s important for me to get back into it since my internship ends here in July.

I’m starting a new fitness regime (well I have been relatively good since the new year) and I’m going to try my best to document it here!

Brink Magazine

This is my final year project in Dublin Institute of Technology, we created a magazine aimed at young professionals. I wrote five feature articles on various different topics including emigration, entrepreneurship and language learning. I enjoyed the process, I felt I did a lot of the work for the magazine content wise and my grade didn’t reflect that which was annoying!!

Have a browse and tell me what you think!!

Aforementioned Falafel Recipe!

Can of chickpeas
1 onion
1-2 cloves of garlic (Depending on how garlic-y you want it)
Bunch Fresh Coriander
Fresh Chilli (Or flakes) ( optional)
2 tsps of Cumin Powder
2 tsps of Coriander Powder
Salt & Pepper
Flour (To bind)

1. Drain chickpeas and dump into saucepan, cover with cold water and bring to boil…… boil for about 15 mins and then simmer for 20 mins or so.

2. Dice your onion and garlic coriander and chilli.

3. Drain chickpeas and put in a bowl, add all chopped veg and spices.

4. Using either your hands, a fork or my personal favourite a hand blender, whizz all ingredients until they form a paste. The blender really works well here.

5. Add a couple fo tablespoons of flour-spelt- gluten free, ect to the mix to bind it together so that you can work with it.

6. Roll into balls, about 2inchs x 2inches and get ready to cook!

7. You can either fry bake or grill these falafels. To be honest they tast much better fried- or grilled than baked, the texture changes when it’s baked and it’s too hard- avoid it I say.

8. I recently got a George Foreman grill which is fantastic because it flattens your falafel into burger patties and cooks them super quick! Otherrwise just flatten the balls into patties and fry in the oil of your choice, probably extra virgin or coconut!

And that’s it! They’re so so tasty just like Melissa’s Save the Cow burgers and they’re perfect in a wholemeal pitta bread with salad and a little dash of sweet chilli! YUM!Image

Smelling Gorgeous on a budget– Saphir Perfumes

So after five long years I’ve finally completed my Journalism degree. Hip hip hooray!! After producing Brink Magazine I was commissioned to write a few articles for The Anglo Celt, but for the moment I am free and now and the lack of assignment deadlines has given me the urge to Stumbleupon and Pinterest to my heart’s content. Last week I discovered this website called Saphir Parfums ( This company are dedicated to creating copycat or “dupe” perfumes, for a fraction of the price of brand name fragrances. A 25ml bottle costs €8.99 and a 200ml bottle costs €24.99. They claim to be scientifically similar in the composition of over 70 popular fragrances but would they smell the same?? 25. Select One Man                   The One(Dolce & Gabbana)
  26. Life De Saphir                      Diesel

I decided on ten fragrances, six female scents and four male scents. Here’s my verdict.

Prestige                                 Coco Mademoiselle (Chanel)

This is my mum’s favourite fragrance….when I walked into the house wearing Prestige she immediately asked me where I had found her secret stash of Coco Mademoiselle (CCM). It smells identical to CCM, sweet and flowery and it lasts for hours. For those who want the scent of Coco Mademoiselle without the hefty price tag I could not recommend Prestige enough.

Agua De Mayo                      CK-One (Calvin Klein)

CK-One used to be my fragrance of choice, an ex boyfriend had a bottle of it and I used to steal a spritz of it here and there. It’s such a classic unisex scent, citrusy but in my opinion borders on the manly side.  Agua De Mayo recreates this balance perfectly and the fragrance lingers long after it has been applied.

Select One                           The One (Dolce & Gabbana)

A dear friend of mine used to cloak herself in this perfume, I can vividly remember sitting beside her in secondary school and being overpowered by the smell.  Select One has the exact same spicy scent as D&G’s The One, however after been worn for a couple of hours it fades to a less intrusive musky scent, which is much more palatable in my opinion. I will definitely be recommending Select One to my friend- for my sake!!

Elegance                                J’Adore (Christian Dior)

I love everything about this fragrance.  It’s so glamorous and opulent; it’s sweet but not sickeningly so. It lasts for hours and then fades to a delicate musky scent which smells. I can find no difference between Elegance and J’adore except the colossal price difference. I will definitely be ordering a large bottle of Elegance from Saphir.

SPH Green                             Be Delicious (DKNY)

I love the freshness of SPH Green. The scents of apples, sandalwood and rose really come through in this fragrance. It is a perfume I would wear on a daily basis as it’s so subtle yet fresh and clean.  I need to order a large bottle of SPH Green as soon as possible!

Saphir 29                               Chanel No 5 (Chanel)

I can understand why Ms Monroe wore this and only this in bed- it’s so strong it will stay on the sheets for weeks! Of course Chanel No 5 is a classic and Saphir 29 has recreated the scent impeccably- no easy feat as there are so many different notes in Chanel No 5. When first applied it emits a strong musky odour which leads to a sweet powdery scent after a couple of hours wear. Saphir 29 is a must buy for fans of Chanel No 5.

Rich De Saphir                     1 Million (Paco Rabanne)

My boyfriend has not stopped wearing Rich De Saphir since it arrived in the post.  It is a woody fragrance of sandalwood with hints of lemon and mint. It’s the perfect blend of musky and sweet and lasts for hours.  Even after a long day of work he comes home and the scent still lingers. I will definitely be purchasing a large bottle of Rich De Saphir for Christmas!!

Brotes Man                          Le Male (Jean Paul Gaultier)

This is my personal favourite. I’ve always loved the look of the John Paul Gaultier sailor bottle, but have never been a fan of the price! Brotes Man smells of lavender, mint, cinnamon and vanilla and these all combine to create a sensual and irresistible scent. Cannot recommend Brotes Man highly enough!!

Boxes De Saphir                   Hugo (Hugo Boss)

This is the fragrance that I am most familiar with. My dad has worn it for years. Boxes De Saphir have nailed the scent! In fact I replaced dad’s bottle of Hugo Boss with Boxes De Saphir and he couldn’t tell the difference! It has the same warm woody fragrance and lasts for hours. That’s Dad’s Christmas present sorted!

Armonia Black                     Armani Code (Giorgio Armani)

Armonia Black captures the oriental spicy hints of Armani Code. It’s quite a heavy scent so is more suited to night time wear. It is almost overpoweringly strong when first applied but fades to a pleasant musk after an hour or so. Fans of Armani Code will love Armonia Black.

So overall I think that Saphir have done an amazing job with their fragrance range,  It’s perfect for those who want to smell luxurious at a fraction of the price, believe me the only difference is the packaging!  Try it out for yourself!

Bunting and Fairy Lights- the birth of a festival

It was never going to be easy to fill the gaping hole that was left by the All Ireland Fleadh, us Cavan folk had it for three years, three…we were spoiled. But somehow, despite the odds, Blessfest did it.

Blessfest, the brainchild of the lovely Paula McQuillan is a three day mini festival of music and spoken word. Although it was a ‘blessing’ that it happened that is not where the name originated. The location for the event was “Blessings Bar” a pub with a sizeable beer garden situated smack bang in the centre of main street, Cavan town. The marquee had been…
